Abstract

The possibility of J dependence of s-wave neutron strength function S is examined empirically, (a) by comparing adjoining odd-mass I ≠ 0 and even (I nuclei (b) by requiring that the strength function should vary smoothly with atomic weight for adjoining odd-mass nuclei with different spins, and (c) by comparing the average reduced widths for the various isotopes of uranium. It is concluded that SI is proportional to 12J, and therefore that the optical potential should have a contribution which is dependent on target spin.
