On the stability of flows started from rest

It is shown that a horizontal fluid layer impulsively heated from below has as its stability boundary the same critical Rayleigh number RE as in the case of classical Bénard convection, i.e. if R < RE, then no convective motion can persist indefinitely. Extensions to more general heating histories and more general flows are indicated.
