Abstract

We optimize replacement time for a system that fails according to an increasing failure-rate distribution. The problem has a finite horizon, and our goal is to minimize expected total maintenance cost. The associated objective function is piece-wise convex but discontinuous, and we develop an algorithm to optimize replacement time. We illustrate our approach on a real problem from the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company in Bay City, Texas, USA.
