Abstract

We present a new method for determining the radiation losses produced when a weakly-guiding optical fibre is bent. In contrast to previous work, we make no assumptions about the type of bending allowed; the centreline of the fibre is allowed to follow any path in three-dimensionalspace. In particular, the method clearly shows the effects due both to curvature andto torsion. In addition, the result we obtain contains a detailed description of the distribution of theradiated energy.
