Abstract

Describes how Northwestern University utilizes faculty data in its human resources information system with grant, publication, patent and other data and technologies to produce the powerful research networking and expert discovery tool, Northwestern Scholars. With minimal effort needed by the faculty, this innovative and open web-based system reaps benefits for faculty, existing and prospective students, university administration, external researchers and more. Its searchable and navigable database profiles schools, departments, and faculty across all disciplines, revealing their university appointments, graduate program memberships, research expertise and trends, publications, grants, patents, achievements, and existing and potential research collaborations and similar experts within and outside of the institution.
