Oxygen vacancy clustering in YBa2Cu3O7-x (x<0.15)

Abstract

Oxygen vacancy ordering in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) where x<0.15 was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The study found that weak diffuse streaks in the 〈100〉 and 〈010〉 directions in electron diffraction patterns of YBCO can be correlated to oxygen vacancy platelets observed in high resolution images. Multislice simulations have been done to match the contrast variations of oxygen platelet defects to the experimental images. Initial simulated defects have the oxygen atoms in a CuO chain removed to form an O vacancy row in the 〈010〉 direction, and then every unit cell below the O vacancy row had the same O atoms removed, thus creating an oxygen vacancy platelet.
