Abstract

The gas-phase fundamental and overtone (υ = 1-7) spectra of the CH stretching modes of the series M(CH3)4 (M = C, Si, Ge, Sn) have been recorded using intracavity photoacoustic laser spectroscopy as well as standard infrared techniques. Absorption cross sections have been obtained for υ = 5 and 6 of the series. The change in frequency of the transitions and the mass-dependent changes in linewidth are interpreted in terms of a local mode description of vibrational overtones.
