Zirconium phosphonate based layer-by-layer assembly methods can be used to prepare multicomponent solid-state organic electrical cells. The components can either be interleaved (if a nanoporous material comprises one of the components) or sequentially structured. When irradiated with visible light, photocurrents are elicited via mechanisms that appear reminiscent of organic photovoltaic devices.
