Abstract

This chapter reviews the physiology of the pneumoperitoneum, focusing specifically on the traditional CO2 method and new alternatives which may ultimately replace it. A continued emphasis on providing for a safe, effective and physiologically benign intra-abdominal exposure will be mandatory if laparoscopic procedures of increased complexity and longer duration are to be applied to patients who are old or very young, and ill.
