Abstract

Stroke is well suited for prevention as it has a high prevalence, a number of modifiable factors proven to reduce stroke risk, and a high societal economic and disability burden. In this chapter we review lifestyle and vascular risks for first and recurrent stroke prevention according to recent American Heart Association and American Stroke Association guidance. In addition, we discuss medical and surgical means to affect stroke prevention. Over time, we have refined our knowledge of stroke prevention based on elucidation of stroke subtype and clinical trial results.
