Abstract

Over the past few years our group has been involved in the development of new PMMA bone cements containing a semi-crystalline microstructure. The partial crystallization of PMMA in these cements is induced by the presence of stereochemically regular molecular segments. Relative to control amorphous cements, the semi-crystalline cements have been found to have enhanced fatigue resistance and ultimate strengths. Other important differences relative to controls are higher levels of monomer to polymer conversion, and lower maximum temperatures during the setting polymerization reactions. From a clinical standpoint, the improved properties of semi-crystalline cements have potential in lowering the incidence of microscopic cement fracture and thermally-induced necrosis.
