Abstract

Propagation of ultrafast pulses in a different kind of nonperiodic system is analyzed. Both layers of the structures being analyzed are considered to exhibit Kerr nonlinearity. The transmittance and reflectance characteristics of the proposed structures are investigated. When the out-of-phase linear grating is large enough to cause a significant built-in reflectance, the transmittance reveals an interplay between-built-in and intensity-dependent grating behavior. Pulse shapes in the presence of an out-of-phase linear grating are also determined. Pulses exhibit compression, reshaping and high-amplitude multi-peak oscillation effects depending on the length of the device.
