Remediation of Language Disorders in Adults

Abstract

There are many approaches to language rehabilitation for adults with acquired aphasia. This brief review describes the major types of language treatments and provides examples of each. Treatment efficacy and effectiveness are also addressed.

27 1992 1 17 Leora R. Cherney, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Medical School, Associate Professor, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Northwestern University, and Clinical Research Scientist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. She is board-certified in neurologic communication disorders by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) and a Fellow of both the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association. Dr Cherney has coauthored four books related to various aspects of adult neurogenic communication disorders and has many publications in refereed journals, textbooks, and other periodicals. Her research in the area of aphasia is currently funded by federal grants from the National Institutes of Health and from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. Dr Cherney serves on several committees of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), as well as on the Rehabilitation Advisory Board of the National Stroke Association and the Certification Board of ANCDS. She has held previous positions on the Executive Board of the ANCDS, Executive Board of the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association, and the steering committee of the special interest division on Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders of ASHA.
