Revision to the origins of the mononuclear phagocyte

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Numerous types of cells form the category of “innate immune cells,” including basophils, eosinophils, mast cells, dendritic cells, neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages. These cells arise from a common myeloid progenitor and diverge after this stage into their specific compartments. Over the past 15 years, the origins of the mononuclear phagocyte system, that is, tissue-resident macrophages and monocytes, have undergone a massive revision. Here, we elaborate on the highly controversial origin of tissue-resident macrophages.
