Abstract

Simple design of rigid drilled piers loaded laterally and embedded in noncohesive soil, taken as Winkler medium, is given. Piers are taken as rigid, if the deflection curve of pier could be approximated as the straight line, which is valid for length of pier D in sand lying between 3. 5 and 6d, where d donates the diamter of the pier shaft. Rigid pier is assumed to displace parallelly owing to the action of lateral load and rotating about the point in the depth (2/3)D owing to the action of the moment. Horizontal modulus of subgrade reaction is assumed to increase linearly with depth, which holds for noncohesive soil.
