SITE USE EVALUATION FOR DREDGED MATERIAL LANDFILLS

Abstract

The maintenance and development of waterways and harbors in the United States requires the acquisition of almost 3,000 ha of new land annually for the disposal of dredged materials. Presented in this paper is a judgmental site evaluation method that may be used to assess the development potential of such dredged material containment areas. This approach employs judgmental measurements and assessments of site characteristics and use requirements, and feasible site uses are identified as those for which site requirements are most closely matched by available site characteristics. Practical considerations necessitate that feasible uses be evaluated in terms of special development constraints that may exist in the region considered. The illustrative application of this judgmental procedure to four dredged material containment areas in Toledo, Ohio, yielded readily usable information regarding development options that were consistent with both site limitations and long-range plans for the area.
