Abstract

This chapter provides answers to practice-based questions with case studies covering the new principles of diagnosis, classification, staging, treatment, and outcomes in the rapidly advancing field of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Lung cancer is subclassified based upon histology as SCLC which accounts for 13% of all cases, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for 84% of lung cancer. There are two main subtypes of SCLC that can be differentiated histologically: small cell carcinoma, and combined with NSCLC with other types of histologies such as squamous cells, adenocarcinoma, spindle cell, and large cell neuroendocrine. SCLC is highly sensitive to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Current treatment modalities include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. The selection of a treatment modality is highly dependent on cancer staging, which utilizes the AJCC TNM staging system, whereas other societies utilize the older Veteran Administration scheme for SCLC.
