The guest editors would like to thank S. C. Wong and Robin Lindsey, Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, for the opportunity to edit this special issue and for guidance on the various steps to complete. The starting point for this special issue was the Nectar-Cluster 2 workshop organized in Rome late 2009. Three of the articles were originally presentations in the workshop, ‘‘Quality, Regulation and Environmental Sustainability in Public Transport.’’ In association to this we would like to thank Aura Reggiani, Nectar Chair, for contributing to the organization and atmosphere of the meeting and Valerio Gatta, Matteo Russo, Luca Spezia and, in particular, Eva Valeri who operated as members of the local organizing committee alongside ourselves. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the financial support by Nectar, DIPES (Department of Public Institutions, Economics and Society), and CREI (Centre for Research on Institutional Economics) as well as the logistic support from the Faculty of Political science at the University of Roma Tre associated with the workshop.
