Abstract

The spontaneous emission factor β for superluminescent diodes (SLD) is analyzed and is used to estimate its average value. The spontaneous emission factor β has various meanings compared to the spontaneous emission factor of semiconductor lasers. Also, its value considerably differs from that of lasers possessing similar structures. In particular, its value is large for the broad emission spectra of SLDs.
