Abstract

Status asthmaticus is one of the most common admission diagnoses in the PICU. While studies suggest that the overall prevalence of asthma in children has leveled offin recent years, these same studies suggest that the severity of asthma is getting worse. Given the increasing prevalence of obesity and its association with asthma severity, the number of patients admitted to the PICU with status asthmaticus is likely to increase. A stepwise, but aggressive approach to management of these patients is recommended.
