Status epilepticus is defined as a condition characterized by epileptic seizure prolonged or repeated so as to produce a lasting epileptic state. It is estimated that status epilepticus occurs in 50,000 to 60,000 individuals in the United States, with one third to one half of episodes occuring in patients with established epilepsy.
