Abstract

Three conceptually related matters are discussed: (1) stretching of material lines, efficiency, and flow classification in steady flows, especially the linear flow; (2) stretching of material lines and efficiency in chaotic flows, and (3) the relationship of (1) and (2) with the process of deformation and breakup of elongated droplets in unsteady Lagrangian flows.
