Abstract

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Many strokes can be prevented by controlling modifiable risk factors. Modifiable and potentially modifiable risks for stroke include factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiac disorders, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, carotid artery stenosis, sickle cell disease, hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives. Stroke risk calculators and other assessment and quality improvement tools can be incorporated into practice for primary stroke prevention.
