Abstract

Stroke is a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This is especially true in low- and middle-income countries. Mortality from stroke may be predicted by modifiable risk factors such as raised systolic blood pressure, body mass index, and smoking. It has been estimated that up to 80% of strokes may be prevented. Stroke is well suited for prevention as modifiable cardiovascular risk factors account for much of the proportional risk of stroke. In this article, the author reviews risk factors for a first stroke.
