Abstract

X-ray powder diffraction measurements and tensile tests on Bi1.7Pb0.3Sr2Ca2Cu3Oy ceramics have been carried out. The variation of X-ray diffraction intensities and anisotropic thermal parameters BT ij show anomalies in the two temperture ranges, 200–250 K and 100–150 K. The changing values of ΔBT 11 is larger than that of ΔBT 33, which displays a softening of the lattice vibrations mainly in the a-b planes. Ferroelastic loops and the shape memory effect were observed in the same ranges. The results indicate that these anomalies exhibit a possible phase transition.
