Abstract

The 80-year-old Raman phenomenon is the basis of a modern technique that has implications for nanotechnology, modeling, trace analysis, homeland security, and clinical and field analyses. Richard P. Van Duyne and colleagues at Northwestern University discuss the basics, instrumentation, pluses and minuses, and applications in surface science, bio- and chemosensing, and single-molecule measurements.
