Abstract
Using the model system approach, the author accumulated sufficient evidence that the phenomenon of strong metal-support interaction in titania-supported catalysts arises from the diffusion of reduced titania to the metal surface. Such diffusion is rapid and can be observed 'visually' in real time. It appears that both the oxophilic nature of the titanium ion and the d-d interaction between titanium and the metal are responsible for the dramatic change in chemical activity. On this basis, we are extending the study to other oxophilic ions with different d-electron configurations. There is evidence that similar effects occur as well. (Author abstract. )
