Abstract
The surface structure of small metal particles, including details of surface steps and facetting, has been imaged directly at the atomic level using a 600kV high resolution electron microscope. Computer simulations confirmed the interpretation of images in terms of atomic columns and also showed that the detailed atomic structure and surface relaxations of reconstructed metal surfaces have been recorded.
