Abstract

Selection rules for scanning tunneling microscope based inelastic electron tunneling microscopy (STM-IETS) were developed based on the symmetry of the electronic structure and vibrational modes of acetylene chemisorbed on Cu(100). The resulting rules have general implications for the observability of vibrational modes using STM-IETS.
