Abstract

The new ternary compound Na4Cd3Se5 has been prepared by the reaction of CdSe with Na2Se4 at 300/350°C. Na4Cd3Se5 crystallizes in space group D1624-Pnma of the orthorhombic system with four formula unitsin a cell of dimension a = 14.026(1) ³, b = 4.234(2) ³, c = 20.105(1) ³ at 110 K. The structure consists of zigzag layers of 7 z[Cd3Se4-5] separated by Na- cations.Alternatively, these layers can be considered as trimers of corner-sharing CdSe4 tetrahedra. The Cd atoms are each tetrahedrally coordinated to four Se atoms at distances ranging from 2.604(1) ³ to 2.718(1) ³. Each Na atom is surrounded in a square pyramidal manner by five Se atoms at distances of 2.82 to 3.11 ³.
