Abstract

This chapter contains some essential characteristics of a talent development approach to gifted services. This framework, which emphasizes that giftedness is developmental and domain-specific, is contrasted with the historical and traditional approach to giftedness that emphasizes giftedness as a personal trait based solely on intellectual ability. The implications of the talent development framework for identification, educational programming, and psychological support for gifted individuals are also discussed.
