Abstract

Advances in telecommunication technologies have introduced many ways to bridge geographic distance and time, in order to connect clinicians, patients and families and facilitate the remote delivery of health care services and education. The concepts of telemedicine and telehealth are not new; the introduction of emerging consumer technologies and public health challenges highlight new opportunities. This chapter reviews subdomains of telemedicine and telehealth such as teleradiology, teleopthalmology, telepsychiatry, remote intensive care, telesurgery, correctional telehealth and home telehealth. We also discuss considerations for the implementation of telemedicine and telehealth such as licensure and reimbursement, and approaches and logistics to implementation and evaluation.
