Abstract

Television, streaming media, computers, and mobile devices are the major screen media technologies that are being used by children and adolescents today. This chapter provides a historical context of the development of screen media. Next, we examine the research on the effects of these types of screen media on youth mental health outcomes with a focus on the differences in some of the effects based on child age. This chapter includes an expanded section on social media, computers, and streaming media to address the research that has examined these unique types of screen media. Finally, we provide public policy recommendations to support healthy media use and positive outcomes in childhood and adolescence.
