Abstract

Experiments were carried out to determine the branching ratio between reaction and relaxation for loss from the |04>- vibrational state of H2O in collisions with H atoms. Three sets of experiments were repeated several times with different concentrations of H atoms and H2O molecules present in the gas mixtures. The results lead to the conclusion that reaction and energy transfer make comparable contributions to collisions between water in the |04>- state and thermal hydrogen atoms.
