Abstract

The North American residential suburb, which first appeared between 1820 and 1860, was a new kind of community that encouraged new thinking about the arrangement and functioning of the city. Attention is focused on the experience of new communities to the west of Boston, looking at residential mobility, commuting and settlement imagery. -H.Clout
