Abstract
An investigation is made of the situation in which the external heating of a combustible solid is subjected to a small decrease. An integral equation is derived which relates the heating perturbation to the tendency toward thermal runaway leading to ignition. An analysis of the integral equation reveals conditions under which thermal runaway (i) always occur, (ii) never occurs and (iii) is delayed.
