Abstract

Although the crystal structure of boehmite, α-AlOOH, has been the subject of two X-ray investigations, the symmetry of the O-H-O bond in boehmite has remained in doubt. The determination by a nuclear magnetic resonance technique of the symmetry of this bond is reported upon here. The O-H-O bond in boehmite is found to be asymmetric.
