Abstract

This paper discusses the evidence for and significance of a Palmyrene sanctuary in Rome maintained by a Palmyrene community in the city. Previous scholarship proposed that the slave trade was responsible for the presence of the Palmyrene settlers, but this paper will argue that that explanation is incorrect. It will posit instead that the Palmyrene community in Rome formed part of a larger pattern of Palmyrene trade, which took place through a 'trading diaspora' that included the imperial capital.
