Abstract
Ventricular assist systems now occupy a definite role in end-stage cardiac failure. For the common clinical situations of acute congestive heart failure (CHF), post-cardiotomy shock and chronic CHF, this paper describes considerations, strategies and results for the assist systems currently used at the Cleveland Clinic in adults: extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the ABIOMED BVS 5000, the VE HeartMate and the Thoratec.
