Abstract
This article examines the development of outcome measures in residential treatment and proposes the potential value of using projective assessment techniques to specify aspects of therapeutic change. It presents a description of the Rorschach Inkblot Test, and in particular the Rorschach’s Object Representation Scale, as a potentially important measure of personality functioning and treatment effect. The article concludes by describing an exploratory study using the Rorschach assessment of differences in the quality of object representations as one measure of some of the positive intrapsychic modifications which may be associated with the experience of being in residential care.
