Abstract

The metallocyclobutane complex Pt[C3H2(CN)4]P(C6H5)3]2 was prepared from the reaction between 1,1,2,2-tetracyanocyclopropane and Pt[P(C6H5)3]4. The crystal and molecular structure of this complex has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray diffraction data. The crystal has symmetry consistent with the space group P1(C1i) with two molecules of the complex in a unit cell of dimensions a 11.422(5), b 17.001(8), c 10.478(5) », α 107.27(2), β 110.72(2), γ 82.50(2)°. The structure was refined by least-squares techniques to a conventional R index of 0.035 based on 4553 reflections above background collected using a four-circle diffractometer. The structure determination shows that Pt[P(C6H5)3]2 has inserted into the 1-2 carboncarbon of 1,1,2,2-tetracyanocyclopropane. Comparisons are made between the structural parameters of this complex and those of other metallocyclobutanes.
