Abstract

A study of the hcp Gd(0001) surface using the all-electron local density total energy full potential linearized augmented plane wave method reveals that the surface Gd layer expands outwardly by 6% and couples antiferromagnetically with the underlying ferromagnetic bulk. A localized dz2 surface state near the Fermi energy is found in the vicinity of Γ for the majority spin bands.
