Abstract

Thermodynamic data for the binding of ligands to cobalt(II) protoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester (CoP) are presented. Data for formation of the five-coordinate complex LCoP are compared with thermodynamic data for the reversible binding of oxygen (1:1) to LCoP. Enhanced oxygen binding to LCoP for L = imidazole, 1-methylimidazole, and N,N-dimethylformamide is discussed in terms of the π-donor properties of these ligands. Spectral data for the formation of five- and six-coordinate Co(II) complexes are presented, as well as data for the 1:1 oxygen adducts and peroxo-bridged complexes.
