Abstract

Storage of refrigerated, unfixed placentas in case of late complications is recommended for durations of ≥3 days to 2 weeks. At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, placentas are stored for 1 week. Obstetrical staff complained of the logistical and olfactory burden of prolonged storage and requested evidence to support this practice. To my knowledge, no prior study has examined timing of placenta orders or utilization of storage.
