Abstract

Science at its highest levels is a metalinguistic endeavor: the exploration of new languages and new modes of thinking. For the members of a linguistic community - or scientific field - language serves as an instrument for encoding reality. The ecology of matter-energy is secondary to the ecology of thought, for only through an understanding of the conditions in which new ideas are born and old ideas recycled can man's purpose attain harmony with his environment.
