Abstract

Detailed experimental validations are presented of the finite-difference time-domain (FD-TD) computed penetrating electromagnetic fields for a phantom energized by the BSD-2000 annular phased array hyperthermia unit. A whispering gallery effect of the elliptical phantom is discovered. The existence of SAR (specific absorption rate) peaks in the phantom on the side opposite the energized dipoles, predicted by FD-TD, has been experimentally observed. This is of great significance when attempting to heat eccentrically located tumors.
