Abstract
This chapter covers ventricular septal defect (VSD), beginning with its definition, prevalence, historical perspectives, embryology and pathologic anatomy. New concepts of nomenclature, pathophysiology, natural history, and diagnosis are discussed. Finally, medical management is discussed in detail. Patient selection, surgical considerations (such as right atrial approach, transpulmonary arterial approach, transaortic approach, right and left ventricular approaches), and avoidance of conduction injury are covered. Surgical management of VSD with associated lesions is also covered. Complications and results conclude the chapter.
