Abstract
Set theory and algebra have been used quite extensively to describe data bases from the logical point of view. The analogy is carried to the physical level by observing that alternative storage strucctures can be described with the same formalism once the parameters which characterize them are recognized. This mechanism allows arbitrary mappings of a data base onto physical storage to be characterized, with the additional convenience of avoiding unnecessary details, if so desired, such as superfluous control information. The implications of this view for the modelling of data base systems of a stochastic nature are also examined.
