Abstract

Water security, which includes water availability, accessibility, use, and stability, is fundamental for health and well-being. Measures of experiential water security have only recently been developed and their implementation has revealed that water security is critical for good nutrition. After reviewing the history and conceptualization of water security, we discuss emerging evidence about the linkages between water security and nutrition, including food production, diet, exposure to pathogens and pollutants, and the gut microbiome. Given increasing problems with water worldwide, assessment and explicit consideration of water security in research and policy will be critical for meeting global nutrition targets.
