Abstract

Studs Terkel chronicled the wide range of social transformations in the 20th century in books and interviews highlighting people's stories of working, playing, and aging in the years and events of the Great Depression, World War II, and the Civil RightsMovement. Terkel's legacy is a reminder of the enduring relationship between social criticism and sociology, a celebration of and a clarion call for sociologically informed work that is at once humanistic, systematic, and relevant.
